The Grand Canyon is hard to photograph.  Images simply fail to capture the dimensional nature of the place, it's depth, it's scale, it's overwhelming presence.  I've hiked the Canyon, backpacked the Canyon, stayed at Phantom Ranch, stayed at the hotels on the South Rim and at the lodge on the North Rim, rented cabins on the North Rim, run the river nad in general spent a lot of time in the place.  In the process I've taken hundreds if not thousands of photographs.

But none truly capture it's sublime presence, a presence that translates into an overwhelming sense peace, tranquility and wholeness.  It is no wonder to me that when Coronado's men first gazed upon the vastness of the Canyon's upper reaches, their diaries simply said "we saw a great chasm."  Words fail.  Pictures fail.

To know the Grand Canyon, you must go there.

But for those of you who visit the real world via the internet, here are some images from our trip that will give you a taste of what we saw and experienced.  But remember:  It is just a taste and without visiting, it will never be more than that.
